By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 237

In the high altitude of Mexico City, Brandon Royval had just a little bit more left in the tank.

Royval utilized a high-volume offensive approach to gradually pull away from ex-flyweight king Brandon Moreno, taking a closely contested split decision in the UFC Fight Night 237 headliner at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City on Saturday night. With the victory, Royval moves closer to championship contention while also avenging a November 2020 defeat at the hands of Moreno.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 237, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

510: Significant strikes attempted by Royval, the fourth most in UFC history and the most ever in a flyweight bout. The previous flyweight record of 356 strikes attempted was held by Jeff Molina. By comparison, Moreno attempted 211 significant strikes, less than half as many as his opponent.

145: Significant strikes landed by Royval, who connected on just 28% of his attempts. Moreno, meanwhile, landed 112 significant strikes for a success rate of 53%.

4: Submission wins at 145 pounds for Ortega in the Octagon. That ties him with Makwan Amirkhani, Daniel Pineda and Chas Skelly for second most in UFC featherweight history. Only Charles Oliveira (six) has more submissions in the weight class.

39: Significant striking deficit in Round 1 for Ortega, when Rodriguez dropped him and nearly finished the fight. Overall, Rodriguez outlanded his opponent by a 55-to-28 count in significant strikes.

3: Takedowns landed in six attempts for Ortega. “T-City” also enjoyed 5:21 of control time compared to 1:32 for his opponent.

32: Significant strike advantage for Daniel Zellhuber in Rounds 2 and 3 of his lightweight matchup against Prado. After being outlanded 29 to 27 in the opening stanza, Zellhuber pulled away over the final 10 minutes for a unanimous decision triumph.

87: Significant head strikes for Zellhuber. Prado, meanwhile, landed 30. Prado did more damage to the lower body, holding a 34-to-8 advantage in significant leg strikes.

94: Significant strikes landed by Yazmin Jauregui in a three-round verdict over Sam Hughes at strawweight, a UFC best for the Mexican prospect. By comparison, Hughes landed 83 significant strikes. Jauregui outlanded her foe 28 to 19 in Round 1 and 34 to 28 in Round 3, while Hughes held a 36-to-32 edge in Round 2.

14: First-round finishes among 15 professional triumphs for Manuel Torres. The Chihuahua, Mexico, native made short work of Chris Duncan, tapping his adversary with a rear-naked choke 1:46 into the opening stanza of their lightweight clash.

2: Takedowns landed in 12 attempts for Raoni Barcelos against Cristian Quinonez. While the Brazilian often struggled to get the fight to the canvas, his second takedown proved to be critical, because it helped set up the fight-ending rear-naked choke at the 2:02 mark of Round 3.

1,750: Days since Barcelos’ last finish, a second-round TKO of Carlos Huachin at UFC 237 on May 11, 2019.

0-5: UFC record — along with one no contest — for Daniel da Silva, who succumbed to a first-round triangle choke in his rematch with Edgar Chairez on Saturday night. The 27-year-old Brazilian has been finished in all five of those defeats.

31: Significant strikes landed by Fares Ziam in a split-decision triumph against Claudio Puelles at lightweight. By comparison, the grappling-minded Puelles connected on just four. Ziam attempted 48 significant strikes, while Puelles attempted just nine over the 15-minute contest. Puelles did land a UFC career-high seven takedowns in defeat.

9: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 14 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the flyweight bout between Victor Altamirano and Felipe dos Santos in favor of Altamirano. However, cageside judges Junichiro Kamijo and Michael Bell submitted 29-28 tallies for dos Santos to give the Brazilian a split-decision victory.

9: Takedowns landed in 11 attempts for Altamirano, tied for the eighth most ever in a UFC flyweight fight. Altamirano landed six of his takedowns in the opening stanza.

5: Scheduled flyweight bouts on the UFC Fight Night 237 bill, the most ever on a card in the Las Vegas-based promotion. Of course, one of those ultimately became a catchweight after both Edgar Chairez and Daniel da Silva missed weight.
