Preview: PFL 3 ‘Harrison vs. Mokhnatkina’

Anthony Pettis (24-12, 0-2 PFL) vs. Myles Price (11-7, 0-0 PFL)

Pettis was one of PFL’s prized free-agent additions heading into the 2021 campaign, but the Roufusport stalwart’s initial promotional run was a disappointment to say the least. While few expected Pettis to regain the form that saw him become a UFC champion and Wheaties box cover boy nearly a decade ago, it also seemed unlikely that he would become just another guy on the PFL roster. At 35 years old, Pettis’ reliance on athleticism has become problematic as his fast-twitch ability inevitably declines. Couple that with a tendency to fight off his back foot when faced with forward pressure and shaky takedown defense, and it is easy to see why Pettis can be a ripe target for upset-minded foes. With that said, Pettis is increasingly willing to throw caution to the wind and is still capable of pulling off the spectacular sequence on occasion. His toolbox of kicks remains impressive, but he is also prone to surrendering takedowns, and on the mat, he is often content to attack from his guard while his opponent racks up points from top position. A veteran of the European circuit with experience in organizations such as Bellator, Brave Combat Federation, Cage Warriors Fighting Championship and the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts, Price has competed sporadically during his professional MMA tenure. His most recent layoff spans more than three years, as his last appearance came in a split-decision triumph over Peter Queally at Bellator 217 in February 2019. Price is a rangy and durable lightweight who mixes kicks with punches liberally and is competent on the canvas, but his track record is that of a journeyman who falls short against the highest level of competition. Price’s best bet would seem to be to pressure Pettis and plant the former UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting champion on his back for extended periods, but the Team Ryano representative might not be capable of controlling position long enough to execute this gameplan. This seems like a soft matchmaking Touch To allow Pettis to get back on the winning track. If he fails in that regard, then it is a safe bet to assume that the days of “Showtime” as a contender in any organization are long gone. Pettis by KO/TKO is the pick.
