Ivan Menjivar vs. Charlie Valencia

The Matchup: In the UFC’s newly minted bantamweight division, you are only a couple wins away from being a legitimate title contender, given the slim cupboard of opponents. That is going to change in a year or so, but Menjivar and Valencia have an opportunity here.

Once one of the game’s best-kept secrets, Menjivar was a staple lighter weight fighter in the early 2000s. He was also George St. Pierre’s first professional opponent in 2002, which illustrates how lousy life was for the little guys back then. Valencia is a proven commodity, going back to his King of the Cage days. Aggressive and action-oriented, he swings for the finish and rarely gives a dull bout.

Menjivar may have better overall strength and wrestling, but he may be past his peak, despite being 28, as evidenced by recent performances, including his decision loss to Brad Pickett at WEC 53 in December.

Valencia has solid standup, his spear tipped by a very strong right hand. This fight is his to lose, and he will have to employ takedown defense and good timing to rattle Menjivar’s cage and keep it on the feet. There is a good chance Menjivar could plant and outwork him, but Valencia may be a little too well-rounded.

The Pick: It comes down a close decision, with Valencia getting the nod if he can stay away from close exchanges and do enough standing to win rounds.
