Henderson: ‘Only One Matchup’ Worth Cutting to 185

Few fighters have balanced two weight classes as successfully as Dan Henderson.

Since his days as a multi-division champion in Pride Fighting Championships, “Hendo” has demonstrated that he is as versatile a competitor as there is in mixed martial arts. It is clear that the Temecula, Calif., resident is happier fighting at light heavyweight than middleweight, however.

It would take a special set of circumstances for him to drop to 185 pounds again, Henderson said during a UFC 139 conference call on Wednesday.

“Everything’s up in the air right now,” said Henderson, who faces Mauricio Rua at light heavyweight in the main event of UFC 139 on Saturday. “I’m not concerned about it, but I’m never enthused about cutting weight. If I was to cut weight, there’d be only one matchup I’d do that [for]. But things change with different fights and opportunities, so I’m open to doing whatever.”

It sounds as though Henderson is alluding to a rematch with middleweight king Anderson Silva, who he lost to at UFC 82. The Team Quest representative was also asked his thoughts on a potential meeting with current 205-pound champion Jon Jones during the call.

“Jon Jones is very unorthodox, and it would be a fun type of fight for me,” Henderson said. “I haven’t given a whole lot of thought to that as far as game plan. It can’t happen if I don’t get past Saturday.”
