Lou Duva, one of the greatest trainers in the history of boxing,
has passed away at the age of 94. The news broke Wednesday
afternoon that Duva, who had been admitted to St. Joseph hospital
in Paterson, N.J., nine days ago, died this morning.
Duva spent his life training some of the best fighters of their generation, culminating in a career that spanned several decades. His first world champion trainee was Joey Giardello, who won the world middleweight title in 1963 when he upset Dick Tiger. From there, Duva’s rise continued into the ‘80s and ‘90s, where he groomed dozens of fighters into champs. Among his most prized students were Pernell Whitaker, Evander Holyfield, Hector Camacho, Andrew Golota, Meldrick Taylor, Arturo Gatti and Mike McCallum, among many others.
In total, Duva cultivated a total of 19 world champions. The iconic trainer was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998.
