Glory Announces Landmark Event in China on Oct. 14
Glory announced details of a landmark event in China to be held on
Oct. 14. Glory 46: Guangzhou will take place at the Guangzhou
Gymnasium with Simon Marcus defending his Glory middleweight crown
against Alex Pereira in the main event. Heavyweight champion Rico
Verhoeven taking on longtime UFC veteran Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in
the SuperFight Series featured bout.
“When I traveled to China earlier this year in search of talent, I stated my belief that these Chinese fighters would be able to claim top worldwide rankings,” said Cor Hemmers, Managing Director Sports and Head of Talent Operations for Glory. “What we've already seen since then is a group of aggressive and exciting Chinese athletes seizing their opportunities with Glory. It's truly impressive and my hope is that our event in October will inspire a new wave of kickboxers, taking the sport to even greater heights in China.”
Aside from the Marcus-Pereira title affair, the Glory 46: Guangzhou
main card will feature a four-man one-night featherweight contender
tournament. Chenglong Zhang will collide with Quade Taranaki in the
first half of the bracket while Chenchen Li will oppose Masaya Kubo
in the other. The two winners will then face-off in the main card’s
co-main event.
The Verhoeven-Silva bout will be a non-title affair, but it’s an intriguing matchup between arguably the best heavyweight kickboxer in the world against a man who has wins over former Pride champion Fedor Emelianenko, former K-1 World Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem and former UFC titlist Andrei Arlovski.
Rounding out the Glory 46: SuperFight Series undercard card will be a catchweight bout featuring Khaial Dzhaniev against an opponent to be announced in the co-feature; Wei Zhou versus Matt Baker at middleweight; Zaza Sor Aree against Liu Jia at catchweight; Petchpanomrung Kiatmookao vs. TBA at featherweight; and a lightweight encounter featuring Qinghao Meng and Nate Richardson.
