Boxing: Mauricio Herrera wins Technical Decision over Hank Lundy

In the featured bout of Saturday’s HBO Latino telecast, fan favorite Mauricio Herrera had his fight with Hank Lundy cut short, but he still wound up triumphant.

The super lightweight scrap, which headlined a card inside the famed Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, was entertaining from the start, but several errant clashes of heads prevented the contest from living up to its expectations.

Lundy and Herrera’s styles conflicted repeatedly, resulting in their heads coming together several times. Herrera suffered lacerations above both eyes after the first two rounds and as the fight wore on, the cuts worsened. During the fifth round, it was apparent that Herrera couldn’t see and that the cuts were too severe for him to continue. Veteran referee Jack Reiss waived off the action and since the injuries were caused from an accidental foul and because the combatants completed four full rounds, the fight was sent to the scorecards.

One ringside judge had it even at 48-48, but that score was offset by the two others who saw it 48-47 in favor of Herrera. With the technical decision win, Herrera (22-5, seven KOs) walked out of the ring with the regional NABF 140-pound title. Lundy dipped to 25-5-1 with 12 KOs.

In the other two featured bouts, lightweight contender Michael Perez (23-1-2, 11 KOs) scored a sixth round stoppage of late replacement Luis Sanchez (17-4-1, five KOs) while 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph Diaz Jr. (17-0, 10 KOs) won a unanimous 10-round decision over Rene Alvarado (22-5, 15 KOs). Scores were 95-94, 96-93 and 98-91; Alvarado was knocked down in the first.
